Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a armed takeover in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.
