In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
